How to deal with aphids on roses: effective drugs and folk remedies

4 min read

The fight against aphids on roses can last the whole season and be carried out with varying success, because getting rid of these insects for good is almost impossible. However, there are methods that allow you to reduce the number of treatments and enjoy the flowering of roses in peace.

Experienced gardeners do not wait for characteristic traces to appear on the leaves, but carry out the first treatment against aphids in the spring, that is, they are ahead of the curve. But once, alas, is not enough, depending on the chosen remedy, you will have to repeat the steps from 3 to 7-9 times.

The first sign of the appearance of aphids is the abundance of ants scurrying along the stems of a rose

Why aphids are dangerous for roses

Rose green aphids (namely, this species occupies your thorny plantings) can destroy flowers both by themselves and by carrying diseases. If you find even a small colony of aphids on flowers, you should not delay the treatment – it will not resolve itself. Aphids on roses promise you a lot of problems:

  • twisting and yellowing of leaves;
  • deformation and drying of buds and flowers;
  • covering the leaves with a sticky powdery coating;
  • reproduction of black soot fungus on powdery coating, which reduces the level of photosynthesis;
  • infection of plants with viral and fungal diseases;
  • the death of a weakened plant or all plants in the rose garden (in especially advanced cases).

Prevention of the appearance of aphids (attracting ladybirds and lacewings to the site, planting marigolds, buckwheat, cumin, hyssop, etc.) does not always save you from the appearance of colonies, so it is better to always keep effective means of fighting aphids on hand.

Ways to deal with aphids

To an inexperienced grower, on whose rose garden aphid first appeared, measures to combat it are unknown and seem rather blurry. It is clear that you need to buy something and somehow process the plants, however, where to start is completely incomprehensible. In fact, everything is not difficult, and remedies for aphids on roses can be divided into three groups.

Mechanical treatment of rose bushes from aphids

As soon as you notice aphids on your roses, you should start processing. If there are still few insects, mechanical removal of pests can be dispensed with. They do this in two ways – washing off the aphids with a strong jet of water from a hose or crushing them with gloved hands.

Before proceeding with the mechanical removal of aphids, tear off and burn the affected (twisted and yellowed) leaves

It is necessary to wash off the aphids from the bushes for several days in a row to get rid of those pests that have just hatched from the eggs. By itself, aphids that have fallen on the ground are absolutely helpless and quickly become the prey of ladybugs, lacewings, spiders, wasps and other predatory insects.

If there are very few aphids yet, put on rubber gloves and simply crush the emerging colonies right on the stems and leaves, and then douse the bush with water. Aphids are small and soft, so this process will not give you any discomfort.

The fight against aphids folk remedies

Treatment of aphids with folk remedies comes down to spraying roses with a variety of infusions and decoctions that have a pungent odor or taste and turn flowers into food that is completely unappetizing for aphids. There are many recipes, but most often summer residents respect several of them.

Soap solution from aphids

Grate laundry soap (you will need 4-5 tablespoons of shavings), dissolve it in a liter of water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Treat plants with it, repeat this every 2 weeks or after heavy rain.

Take only laundry soap, because scented toilet soap, on the contrary, will become an additional bait for aphids and other harmful insects.

Ash decoction from aphids

Dilute 300-400 g of ash in 10 liters of water , put on fire and boil for 2 hours. Cool, remove large pieces (to avoid clogging the sprayer), and treat the rose garden and other aphid-prone plants.

Infusion of tobacco dust from aphids

Pour half a glass of tobacco dust with a liter of water and boil the mixture for half an hour. Let it brew for a day, strain, dilute with water twice and add a little (10-20 g) laundry soap. Spray roses with the resulting mixture every 14-20 days.

The main “shepherds” and breeders of aphids are ants, so you will have to deal with them, destroying large anthills in your area.

Infusion of onion peel from aphids

Pour 200 g of onion peel with 10 liters of warm water and send it to heat for 5 days. After that, strain and spray the affected plants, as well as those that are still healthy (for prevention purposes).

Infusion of garlic from aphids

Take a couple of large heads of garlic, grind together with the peel, pour a bucket of water and let it brew for 24 hours. Spray the bushes with this infusion from aphids, weevil, ticks.

  • How to deal with aphids – effective folk remedies

    Aphids are one of the most dangerous garden pests. Learn how to get rid of this insect using folk methods.

Professional preparations against aphids

Store-bought aphid preparations are distinguished by their effectiveness, speed of action and long-term action. However, not everyone is ready to use “chemistry” in their area. If there are few aphids on your roses, get by with folk remedies, but if all plants are already affected, and the colonies are spreading through the garden at an incredible speed, endangering not only flowers, but also the harvest of fruit and berry crops, go to “heavy artillery”.

The most effective (and sold in any garden store, which is also important) aphid preparations are as follows:

  • Aktara ,
  • Alatar ,
  • Antitlin,
  • Aliot ,
  • Biotlin ,
  • Inta-Vir ,
  • Spark,
  • Kinmix ,
  • MatrinBio,
  • Preparation 30 Plus,
  • tanrek,
  • Fitoverm ,
  • floristin spray,
  • Tsvetolux Bau.

They are used strictly according to the instructions – some are enough to use twice per season, others will have to be applied three times. The important thing is that, like aphid biologics, they must be used as soon as you find the first pests, while strictly observing the dosage. Remember that aphid preparations should not fall on edible crops growing nearby, since in this case it will be necessary to postpone the harvest for 20-30 days.

Aphid preparations on roses are mostly poisonous, therefore, treatment should be carried out only with the use of protective equipment (in closed clothing, a hat, a respirator, gloves and goggles).

Do not assume that the use of insecticides will not affect the roses themselves. Unfortunately, after processing, their flowers will become unsuitable for medical and cosmetic purposes, and in rare cases, the smell may also change. In addition, the aphid breeds new offspring every two weeks, which means that it quickly adapts to the active substances used against it. Alternate preparations (remember, it is not the names of the products that should differ, but their active ingredients!), Do not skip intermediate treatments with infusions and decoctions based on natural ingredients, knock down aphids mechanically and attack on all fronts.
